Apreciados Colegas:

IAM o RVM no complicados

Dear ISPO Member,
Welcome to the April edition of ISPO eUpdate.
This month heralds changes at the ISPO Head Office: Executive Director Tom Reiser will be handing over the reins to Milagros Mostaza. While we are sad to see Tom go, we would like to thank him for his dedication to ISPO and for supporting the important activities and developments we have carried out together.
In other news, ISPO is gearing up for the launch of the World Bank and World Health Organization's (WHO) World Report on Disability in New York on June 9, 2011. Following last month's confirmation that ISPO will continue its collaboration with the WHO, the Society is proud to support this report and aims to be part of more common initiatives in the future.
ISPO extends its sympathy to members of our community who were affected by recent natural disasters, including floods in Australia, an earthquake in New Zealand, and the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The Nippon Foundation/CANPAN Northeastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund has contacted ISPO with a call for support to help the victims of the disaster. Please see page 3 for more detailed information and directions of how you can help.

NEWS
ISPO Supports World Report on Disability
ISPO is excited to have been invited to be a part of the launch of the World Bank and World Health Organization's (WHO) World Report on Disability in New York on June 9, 2011.
This report sets out to promote health, rehabilitation and participation for persons with disabilities, in line with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It is mandated by the World Health Assembly and is jointly published by WHO and the World Bank. The report summarizes the best available scientific evidence on disability and makes recommendations for action in support of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006).
The World Report on Disability addresses the need for better research and data on disability. It will include the first update of the WHO's disability prevalence estimates for more than 30 years. The report also explores evidence about discrimination and barriers, identifies needs and provides an analysis of what works to improve the lives of people with disabilities in the areas of health, rehabilitation, support services, information, infrastructure, transportation, education and employment.
On June 9, 2011, a special meeting will take place in New York to discuss implementing the report as well as the WHO's next strategic priorities. ISPO Executive Board member Rosie Jované C will represent our Society at this important event. Find out more at http://www.who.int/disabilities/world_report/en/, watch videos on the WHO YouTube channel and join the debate on the WHO Facebook page.
June Conference for Rural and Developing Regions, Puerto Rico
The International Rehabilitation Forum (IRF) has announced its 2nd World Conference on Medical Rehabilitation in Rural and Developing Regions.
The IRF emphasizes the need for rehabilitation professionals working or volunteering in low-resource regions to collaborate. The IRF view is that community based rehabilitation, without development of the expert professional side of rehabilitation including multidisciplinary centers and academic training programs, has left much of the world without rehabilitation leadership. The vast majority of the scientific rehabilitation literature continues to relate to the care of rich industrialized populations. This conference seeks to redress this balance by focusing on less developed parts of the world.
ISPO members are encouraged to attend the meeting, which will be held immediately before the ISPRM World Congress, from June 10 to 12, 2011 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. For more information, please visit www.rehabforum.org or the ISPO website.
ISPO leads the effort to bring prosthetics and orthotics to low-resourced regions of the world. The IRF, a new grass roots organization of professionals has gone a long way to strengthen the field of medical rehabilitation worldwide.
Help Japan
The Nippon Foundation, member organization of the ISPO Open Board, is at the forefront of assistance activities to support those affected by the earthquake and tsunami that struck the north region of Japan on Friday, March 11, 2011.
It is looking for donations to the Nippon Foundation/CANPAN Northeastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund which will provide effective, accountable, and timely support to trusted partners working in the affected areas. To ensure the highest degree of transparency, reports on the receipt and use of funds used will be posted on The Nippon Foundation/CANPAN website.
All donations are being given to the victims of the disaster and can be made online.
NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
Miracles UK Lends Support to Landmine Victims in Bosnia-Herzegovina
Miracles UK began as charity some 16 years ago during the Bosnian war when founding members where taking part in humanitarian relief programs. They decided to stay and form a prosthetics charity that would continue to support people most affected by landmines laid during the war.
In 2009, Miracles conceived of a center dedicated to treating landmine victims and disabled citizens in Bosnia-Herzegovina - a center that offers prosthetic treatment, free of charge to all, irrespective of their age, religion, social background or location.
Landmine casualties have greatly diminished over the past few years thanks to education workshops in schools in Bosnia. Mines have been cleared in populated areas but there are still between 5000 to 8000 landmine victims who need ongoing prosthetic limb support and rehabilitation.
While offering prosthetic limbs, the center also wants to develop a department for psychosocial support. Miracles relies on grants and donations to carry out its work and would welcome support from ISPO members.
Bosnia-Herzegovina remains one of the world's top five most land-mined countries. The nature of the conflict in this region meant front lines moved through towns and villages and many thousands of mines were laid in residential areas. No records were kept of the locations. This resulted in a very high number of civilian casualties for some years after the war ended.
If you are interested in learning more about the center, would like to sponsor Miracles or visit the center, contact James Burton, Miracles Project Director, at
burton.james@me.com.

Staff Changes at ISPO Head Office
ISPO Executive Director, Tom Reiser, will be relocating to the United States in April. Regrettably, this means that he will leave his post as Executive Director of ISPO. While ISPO will miss Tom's contribution and commitment to the Society, we wish him the very best in the future.
We are very pleased to announce that Milagros Mostaza will serve as the new Executive Director from April 1, 2011. Milagros is from Madrid, Spain, and has over 16 years of experience as an association manager and communications professional with various organizations including health and medical related societies.
She is already familiar with ISPO, the developments and activities over the last year, and was directly involved in the interview and selection process over the past two years that led the Executive Board to select Interel as our Head Office.
Please join us in thanking Tom for his vision, hard work, and dedication to helping ISPO grow to the next level as a Society, and in welcoming Milagros as the new Executive Director of the Head Office in Brussels. She can be contacted at
milagros@ispoint.org.
ISPO President Jan Geertzen Visits ISPO Head Office
March saw ISPO President Jan Geertzen travel to Brussels to meet the ISPO team. The main reason for his visit was to meet with the new ISPO Executive Director Milagros Mostaza. He also discussed current activities and future plans on how to increase the impact and effectiveness of the Society.
He gave an overview of presidential priorities for the rest of the triennium and presented an update on the current status of the organization of the ISPO World Congress 2013 in Hyderabad, India. Preparations for the upcoming physical Executive Board meeting in Hyderabad were also presented during the meetings.
ISPO International Executive Board and Education Committee Meetings
The ISPO Executive Board met in Hyderabad on April 2-3, 2011, to review progress to date and discuss future initiatives of the Society. Part of the agenda was dedicated to the 14th ISPO World Congress which will take place in Hyderabad in 2013. This was an opportunity for the Board to visit the Hyderabad International Convention Center and meet with the leadership of ISPO India in the spirit of good cooperation. The organization of the Congress is well under way and more information will follow soon.
Please mark your calendars: 14th ISPO World Congress, Hyderabad, India, 4-7 February 2013!
The ISPO Education Core Committee also held its first face-to-face meeting in this triennium in Hyderabad on 31 March and 1 April 2011. As well as considering immediate short-term goals and actions to be taken, the members discussed long-term objectives and drafted a ten-year strategic plan for the ISPO Education Committee.
More detailed information on outcomes and decisions taken during the Executive Board and Education Committee meetings will be presented in upcoming ISPO eUpdates.

EDUCATION
United Forum of the Americas - Working Together for a Better World
The members of various ISPO Member Societies in Central America joined efforts in 2004 to share information and services to multiply knowledge, improve services and overcome the disabilities.
Uniendo Fronteras/Uniting Frontiers was established by ISPO Panama, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Costa Rica to help interaction with other professionals in the field.
"Uniting efforts is one of the most effective ways to accomplish any goal. We invite other ISPO members, Members Societies or individuals to work together and establish a regional activity that will allow all of us to grow professionally," explains Rosie Jované C., member of the ISPO International Executive Board and General Coordinator of Uniting Frontiers activities.
Uniting Frontiers, in collaboration with and co-sponsored by ISPO USA, has most recently organized the 'United Forum of the Americas - Working Together for a Better World' 2011 in San José, Costa Rica. The event, which took place from 13 to 16 February 2011, gathered over 350 participants. The goal was to collaborate, provide networking opportunities and high quality prosthetic and orthotic rehabilitation content for developing nation professionals and students who might not otherwise have access to this type of continuing education.
"I had the good fortune to attend the Uniting Frontiers Program from the first in Antigua, Guatemala to the most recent in San José, Costa Rica. The programs cover a wide scope of issues in the orthotic and prosthetic fields, from surgery, physical therapy, trauma, special education and social work," adds Laurence Corley, volunteer in the Uniting Frontiers team from the United States.
Latin America has always strongly supported this program with many experts providing wide multi-disciplinary educational support for this event. With ISPO helping to support these programs it will not only make Uniting Frontiers stronger, but also provide more support for ISPO. Mexico will be giving the next presentation of the 5th Forum of Uniting Frontiers in August 2013.
Launch of Philippine School of Prosthetics and Orthotics
The
UERMMMCI College of Physical Therapy is happy to announce the opening of the first Philippine School of Prosthetics and Orthotics (PSPO). The school will offer a five-year course of Bachelor of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics, the first in the country and only the 12th in the world.
PSPO will open its doors in June this year, welcoming its first batch of students. This was made possible thanks to the
Cambodia Trust, the
Nippon Foundation and the
University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center Inc.
Graduates will go on to be leaders in the field of training, service and research on prosthetics and orthotic devices. They are envisioned to uplift the quality of lives locally and globally as educators, researchers, entrepreneurs, advocates, administrators, community organizers and service providers.

Call for Symposia and Instructional Courses - ISPO World Congress 2013 India
![]()
The Scientific Committee for the 2013 World Congress has started developing the Scientific Program for ISPO 2013, of which, as in past World Congresses, a major part will consist of Instructional Courses and Scientific Symposia.
Members of the worldwide prosthetic and orthotic community are invited to submit proposals for presenting an Instructional Course or Symposium.
Proposals for Instructional Courses should have a statement of the course objective as well as what the attendees could expect to gain by the end of the course.

ISPO welcomes New ISPO Member Society in Rwanda
![]()
Please join us in welcoming Rwanda as the newest Member Society to join our growing international collective.
Rwandan P&O colleagues felt the need to establish a Member Society which, together with the national association of Orthopaedic Technologists and the Rwandan Physiotherapists group, can address patients' issues, help improve their quality of life, and enhance continuous training amongst the professionals.
ISPO Rwanda already has plans to support the implementation of a P&O training program at the Kigali Health Institute, which shall adhere to ISPO education standards. There is a need to carry out studies to reveal the number of disabled requiring help as well as to assess their quality of life, and together with other organizations, ISPO Rwanda will contribute to this and to help mobilize funds for care for patients who are not able to afford orthopaedic assistive devices on their own.
If you would like more information about ISPO Rwanda or to get involved, please contact the Member Society's President, Ms Desire Ngendahayo Providence at
ngedesire@yahoo.fr.
If your country or region does not yet have an ISPO Member Society and you are interested in forming one, please visit the ISPO website
here or contact the ISPO Head Office at

Handicap International Wins 2011 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize
The 2011 Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize has been awarded to ISPO Open Board member
Handicap International for its work in assisting people with disabilities in situations of poverty, exclusion, conflict and disaster. Awarded annually since 1996, the Conrad N. Hilton Prize is presented to humanitarian associations for their exceptional contribution to alleviating human suffering.
![]()
For Handicap International, the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize recognizes nearly 30 years of humanitarian action. According to Jean-Baptiste Richardier, co-founder and executive director of the organization : "Handicap International was created in 1982 to stand up for and give voice to the most vulnerable amongst us, persons with disabilities in particular, living in situations of crisis, whether caused by poverty, conflict or natural disaster. I believe the Hilton jurors chose us in recognition of our work with one of the world's largest underserved minorities - people with disabilities - with the expectation that we will invest this precious wealth to further enhance our capacity to deliver qualitative and accountable assistance to the most vulnerable people living in destitute situations around the world."
The $1.5 million prize will be used to strengthen Handicap International's disaster preparedness capabilities and to pre-position emergency response resources for rapid action in future crises. For more information, please see

ISPO INSIDE
ISPO World Congress Goes Biennial !
ISPO will undergo an important directional change related to the frequency and rotation of its World Congresses in the future. Following detailed discussions and a thorough analysis of the history, set-up and impact of ISPO World Congresses, the ISPO Executive Board has taken the decision to change from the current three-year rotation model to a two-year cycle of ISPO World Congresses. The next World Congress following the one in 2013 in Hyderabad will thus take place in 2015.
Through this strategic revision the Board expects increased visibility of the Society on a global scale. On an organizational level, ISPO will continue to work closely with local and regional organizations in order to combine forces, yet will offer greater guidance to local Member Societies in the future and aim to streamline activities through greater standardization of the meetings in order to avoid unnecessary duplications and reinvention of processes and procedures and keep a tight control on costs to allow for the greatest possible participation. As a first step, new Venue Bid Guidelines for the ISPO World Congress 2015 are currently being finalized and will be shared with all ISPO Member Societies next month.
We hope that you welcome and support this important step for our organization that goes in line with ISPO's realm and mission to bring education and information about latest technologies to P&O and related professionals to different parts of the world. We welcome your feedback on this important change at
ispo@ispoint.org.
Spread the Word: Opportunities to Partner with ISPO Abound
